- The best source of information regarding importing is on the
Customs web page at http://www.cbp.gov
. U. S. Customs has stated that importers should consider use of
experts as a means of demonstrating “reasonable care” as provided by
the Customs Modernization Act. A licensed broker is one of the
defined experts.

Continuous Customs Bonds
- Customs law states that Importers must be covered by a
surety bond. This bond covers any penalties Customs could access
for entry errors, omissions and other infractions. This bond
protects U. S. Customs, NOT the Importer. An Importer can secure
a single entry bond for each shipment, or a continuous (annual)
bond. This annual bond covers all shipments for a period of one
year. There are several advantages to having a continuous bond.
First is the savings on premium for Importers with high values,
or many shipments. The other advantage is the possibility that a
shipment will be passed by Customs as “paperless”. This results
in expedited release of cargo. Please contact our office for
more information.
Carnets
- A carnet is an instrument that allows cargo to move
between countries without use of customs entries or bonds. The
ATA carnet takes the place of an entry documentation and allows
for duty free entry to various countries. Carnets are used for
professional equipment, theatrical scenery, demonstration and
trade show goods to name a few scenarios. Please contact this
office for more information.
